From the point of view of time-zones, the capital belongs to the Central-European time zone (GMT+1 hour). Its climate is typical of the temperate zone, it is continental. The coldest month is generally January, the hottest months are July and August.

The daily mean temperature in Budapest is: in January - 0-2°C, February - 4-6°C, March - 5-8°C, April - 9-11°C, May - 8-15°C, June - 9-18°C, July - 8-24°C, August - 21°C, September - 4-15°C, October - 9-12°C, November - ( -3)-3, December - ( -1)-1.

The number of rainy days (in a year) is 35, the number of sunny hours (in a year) is 1853.

The highest point of the capital is the János-hill, it is 527 metres.

Its river is the Danube, which has 9 bridges over it in the territory of Budapest. There is a Hungarian peculiarity that derives from the central location of Budapest inside the country, that all the main roads of the country (except for main road no. 8) start from Budapest radially and their length is measured from the 0 km stone at Adam Clark square.
All the main railway lines start from Budapest too, radially, just like the roads.

The territory of Budapest is 525 square km, 2/3 of which belongs to Pest and 1/3 to Buda. Buda is the hilly part of the city, where you can find the Buda castle with the cave system underneath, the Citadel with the Statue of Liberty and a number of other historical monuments. On the contrary the surface of Pest is flat and even. Here you can find all the banks, shopping centres, theatres etc.

The population is more than 1,8 million that gives approximately 1/5 of the total population of the country while its territory is only 1/180 of the territory of the country.

The capital has 23 districts and there are 194 officially accepted and indicated city parts.



There are 223 museums and galleries which will introduce you the Hungarian history, art and natural science, as well as many of the works of the universal European and world culture.

There are 40 theatres, 7 concert halls and 2 opera houses for the fans of performing arts. These possibilities are multiplied in summer by the outdoor concerts and performances that are homed by the gardens of ancient monuments with their historical atmosphere.

Budapest is the only rat-free capital of the world.
